My older daughter is here visiting this week from Chicago and I'm a little behind on my regular blogging time so will show you another wonderful item that appeared in my farmer's market last week. Melon season is finally here, but not the kinds of melons that have no flavor, that have been picked green and will never ripen into something sweet and juicy. Our melons are grown in the hot, dry areas around Hermiston, Oregon, and are picked when they are fully ripened and ready to eat.
We have the usual watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew, but the star of the show and available for a very short time is the Gallicum melon, a cross between cantaloupe and honeydew. It has the consistency of honeydew and the sweetness of a perfectly ripened cantaloupe. Customers are lined up at the opening bell on market day to purchase this amazing fruit. If you should happened to see Gallicum melons in your market don't pass them by. The are the most luscious, sweet melons you will ever eat.
My precious children came to the market last Saturday to visit me and each other. I love to see them walking the market and enjoying each other's company. Daughter on the left helps me on a regular basis during the summer. Their visits make this mama very happy.
Be sure to attend the famers markets in your area. You will be supporting local businesses and will get to know those who produce the foods we eat, both very important for the life and strength of our communities.
have fun with your kids lovely pic I am getting my first basket from a local farm today excited Rebecca

Lots of cole slaw coming up..maybe I should get a corned beef..that's always nice for a change during the summer..
Have fun with your family!

ReplyDeleteHi Cathy...I just attended a cooking class at the Viking School today and the theme was "From Farm to Table"....very enjoyable class using fresh fruits and veggies...I love going to farmers markets and now that we are eating healthier...(husband has lost 40 pounds since the middle of May) the markets are coming in handy.....I laughed about people waiting in line for themelons....It reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer and Newman go crazy for peaches that are only availible 2 weeks out of the year.....
ReplyDeleteLovely family! The melon looks so refreshing. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteI have not heard of this melon before, but it looks so good! I went to our farmers market yesterday and am busy planning this weeks meals with my treasures!
ReplyDeleteOkay, now I am on the hunt for those melons.
ReplyDeleteWe love melon at our house. Glad you got a visit from your kids. Know that you enjoyed it!
