Newberg's Old Fashioned Festival ~ Small Town America at It's Best

Last week my hometown of Newberg celebrated our Old Fashioned Festival, almost a week of fun, parades, fireworks, food, entertainment, a carnival and a car show. Newberg is a small, quiet town where you can walk down Main Street and not know if it is 1959 or 2009. We're at the northern end of the Willamette Valley and in the heart of some of the best wine country you will ever find. The festival is always great fun and was special this year because we are also celebrating Oregon's 150th birthday. I'll take you on a quick tour of this very special community event. I love small town America.

This float took the Grand Prize in the Children's Parade. They were celebrating the settlers who made their homes here along the Willamette River.

This little Trapper is our special guy who got to ride on the winning float.

Every Festival needs a princess or two.

There's something wonderful about fair food: all the deep fried stuff and food on a stick.

What more could anybody want?

Unless it's a plate of these.

Are you feeling lucky?

Almost everyone in town attends the weekend Pancake Breakfast.

A local dance team entertains the crowds.

Need any Tupperware?

Perhaps a foot massage?

Or a lovely painting on velvet.

I went early before it got too hot and crowded. I love my community. I feel safe here surrounded by my family, friends and neighbors. This is the kind of event that binds people together and makes a community strong. I hope you have an event like this where you live.

HELP: Is there anyone who can tell me how to fix the spacing on this post? Anyone? It looks perfect when I write it but comes out like this when I have multiple photos. I just couldn't try to fix it one more time so I published it anyway as is. It's 108 degrees here and my nerves are as fried as the poor flowers in my yard.

  2. Thanks for the tour, Cathy. It looks like a wonderful festival. I have a terrible weakness for curly fries, so I better get out of here while my resolve is strong.

  3. You are so lucky to live in a quaint town that knows how to celebrate! It will soon be food on a stick time here with our state fair :)

    I love that little trapper!

  4. First of all, I feel sorry for you and all the heat you dear people are experiencing in the NW. As for the spacing, I have lots of trouble with it also, but I go in and hit the delete button until the picture is up next to the previous comment. But, be careful, one step too far and the picture is also deleted. It just seems that it should be easier.

  7. Loved the tour!

I am a novice...are you wanting the text beneath the photo? You might try centering the photo and placing text beneath it.

The only thing that works for me is to select the photo and hit control X. That cuts the photo. Then I put as many spaces as I want beneath the picture and hit control V. You probably know all of that but that is how I go about placing....not perfect but it works for now!

  9. That looks like so much fun. (I certainly could use the foot massage! And, as a matter of fact, I could use a couple of pieces of "suckerware" - as my ex-FIL used to call it -, too!)

Hopefully your temps will fall soon. We're having a few days of unusually not-hot days here in Dallas. Weird weather.

When I'm having spacing issues, I usually go into the html code and edit spaces there. I have much more success doing that. I'm no html expert, so it's kind of hit and miss, though I'm getting to know a little more since I've been playing in that end of the pool. :-/

  10. I think it's a blogspot thing. Cause sometimes mine drives me insane with the spacing and I can't get lines where I want them either.

I love small town festivals. We recently had the Tomato Festival in Crystal Springs, MS.

Couldn't drag me behind a mack truck to live in Jackson again.

  11. Cathy,

I love small town festivals and fairs - we just went to one in Idaho for the Fourth.

I always had problems with spacing until I downloaded Google Chrome. Now I input my posts when using Goodgle Chrome and there are NO SPACING issues. I can copy and paste really easily and can adjust my photos. I love it!

  12. We drove through this festival but didn't stop darn it.

I don't use blogger so I'm unsure of your spacing issues!

    Stay cool!

  15. What fun! I love events like that!
Ours is a small town most of the year.
During the summer it fills up, but come September they leave and it is wonderful again!
I am a small town gal, the city makes me nervous!

I am so NOT Techie. I am having an issue with a dating service hijacking my blog..some other bloggers are having it too, and so far no help!
Thanks for the tour, I loved it, and your gkids are adorable!

I wish you cool breezes! And space control..:)

  16. Great post Cathy. I love little fairs and town events like this too. The town where my parents are from in Port Barre, La has the Pork Crackling Festival lol!!! We have been suffering with the same heat but I think you got it worse if that's possible. We did get to 106 on Wednesday.

I have had the same spacing issue especially recently. I'm not sure how to fix it. Sometimes you can go into the html and take out some hard breaks..sometimes I can't find them.

  17. Looks like you had a grand time! I love local traditions like that and the kids did a great job on their float.

To fix the space gaps just backspace like you would a word document and it will delete the extra space. You can do it Cathy :)
