I've been thinking about buying an ice cream freezer for ages but just kept putting it off for all the usual reasons: where would I put it, do I need it, and most important, would I use it. I looked at a large display yesterday morning in the local kitchen shop and even had one in my hands to take up to the register, but my good sense won out and I put it back in the display and left to run more errands. As I was dashing around Costco I couldn't resist a quick run down the small appliance aisle and you will never believe what I found - my coveted ice cream maker for much less than what the kitchen shop charged and a promotion that included two of the ice cream freezer bowls instead of the one that I would have gotten if I had bought the freezer earlier in the day. So my point in telling you this story is that, if you have the thought that you need an ice cream freezer for summer, now is the time to buy it. I can't believe my good fortune and that, for once, my indecision paid off.
When my children were little we had an old fashioned, hand crank wood ice cream freezer that required two people to make it work properly. One had to sit on the freezer so it would stay in one place, and one had to do the cranking. Everyone had to take a turn at the crank if they wanted ice cream, and it was a giant pain at the time, but the memories now are sweet and we talk about that hand cranked treat with deep fondness. My new little counter size freezer is perfect now and I can't wait to make some of the fantastic recipes for ice cream that I'm starting to see on my favorite blogs.
A little recipe booklet came with the freezer and this is my adaptation of their lemon sorbet. I added some Lemoncello to the mixture (so delicious) but it kept the sorbet very soft (the reason for the slightly melted appearance in the photo) and I will add less next time. I was hoping for a photo that did justice to this scrumptious sorbet, but it wasn't meant to be. It melted too fast and I had to eat it. Come to think of it, this would be great served in a cocktail glass with a little straw. I'm sure this would freeze perfectly if you left the Lemoncello out altogether. But who wants to do that!
Fresh Lemon Sorbet
2 cups water
1-1/2 cups sugar
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest
1/2 cup Lemoncello (what can I say, I like it) 1/4 cup would probably do it.
Combine the sugar and water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer without stirring until the sugar dissolves. Cool and add lemon juice, zest and Lemoncello. Refrigerate until very cold, at least an hour. Turn the freezer on and pour the lemon mixture through the ingredient spout and mix until thickened, about 25-30 minutes. Transfer the frozen sorbet to an airtight container and freeze several hours or overnight.
I know that most of you are old hands at making ice creams, sorbets and frozen yogurt, but it's new to me and I'm excited. I'm thinking of all the fresh fruits that will be in the market soon and how much my family likes frozen desserts. With two freezer bowls I'll be ready to make ice cream at a moments notice. So, if an ice cream freezer is on your want list, check out this great deal at Costco.
Delicious sorbet. Neat how you served it in lemon haves. Enjoy your ice cream machine!
ReplyDeleteCathy, I will most definitely check it out! I've been in the market for a new icee cream maker since ours burned out! Nothing like homemade gelato!

I wonder if our Costco up here will have the same special - if not, I'm heading down to Everett WA in two weeks and will check out their Costco. That sorbet looks so pretty - and I love Lemoncello too - just what I need.....another way to enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new ice cream machine. We have the same one and you are going to love it. The lemon sorbet is looking deliicous.
ReplyDeleteThis post caught my eye Cathy!! I too have been dreaming of ice cream and ice cream makers!! Warm weather coming and all. I believe I will be taking a trip to Costco this weekend to have a peek. That lemon sorbet looks wonderful. When my Mom and I were in Italy, we loved this refreshing treat after a long day of sight seeing. Rome had the best! They were served in the lemon skin that had been hollowed. It was heavenly. . I can't wait to try making some ice cream. I remember taking my turn to sit on the hand crank machine we had as kids. Oh the fun!!!
ReplyDeleteThat lemon sorbet looks wonderful! Just found your blog today. We lived in Oregon for 5 years. So beautiful there. Looking forward to reading/seeing more.
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds like so much fun. We had an old ice cream freezer that was my hubby's before we married and we had never used it so he gave it to our neighbors. Darn!! That Cuisinart model looks pretty nice though. Maybe I need to head to Costco.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to buy an ice cream maker but never knew enough about them to know which ones were good or not. Thanks for the tip on Costco. I will definitely check it out. This sorbet looks so refreshing. Looking forward to hearing about your adventures with your new toy..lol.
ReplyDeleteI just got this same maker but mine didnt come from Costco so I dont get the 2 bowls. Bummer for me. Your sorbet sounds wonderfully refreshing! I might have to give it a try too!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun, Cathy, and that lemon sorbet looks so refreshing and good! Have fun with your new toy!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Sheila :-)
Looks so refreshing...you'll be so glad you have that new contraption this summer!
ReplyDeleteYUM! Although there is something to be said about the hand cranking ice cream maker. (The memories are wonderful of all those summers in the backyard!) I'm guessing this one will be much easier. The kids and I are so glad you bought this! Assuming you're going to share, of course. =o)
ReplyDeleteI have an ice cream maker that's still brand new. I have to take it out and use. Summer will be here soon and I must make lots of ice cream and sorbets. Your lemon sorbet looks refreshingly delicious. Thanks for sharing. MaryMoh at http://www.keeplearningkeepsmiling.com
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous and I'm drooling just looking at it. I can only imagine how good this must taste. I hope you are having a great day. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteI love the lemon serving bowls.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteYour sorbet looks wonderful and so yummy!! An ice cream is the one of the few gadgets I don't have in my kitchen but I'm "working" my husband to see if he offers me one (lol)!!
Love,
Lia.
I need to renew my Costco card:D
ReplyDeleteYou must see the green around my head. It is called envy. I have been eyeing these for years. Gave each daughter one some years ago and did not keep one for myself. It just seems so....unnecessary but still....I guess if I was stick thin it would make more sense. Let's see if I can stay away from Costco.....
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely ice cream maker Cathy. Your ice cream with the limoncello must have tasted fabulous and it's a shame it melted so fast. I really like limoncello.
ReplyDeleteI gave away my ice cream maker to make room for a panini press and a fryer. We use the panini press a lot, but we've hardly ever used the fryer. After taking a look at your new Cuisinart, the fryer has to go.

Great minds think alike! I have the same ice cream maker and just made lemon sorbet and put it in lemons. Isn't that a funny coincident?
ReplyDeleteDon't you love this ice cream maker? I do. It is so easy, and I have 2 ice cream freezer bowls, and I had to but the second one. I make delicious ice cream and sorbets all the time.
I'm glad you posted this so others can get this wonderful machine just in time for summer fun. Thanks for the public service announcement and a great recipe! The addition of lemoncello is brilliant!
Yvonne
" It melted too fast and I had to eat it." What a shame! LOL :-)
ReplyDeleteMy DD has one. I think I may need to borrow it, just to try making this lemon sorbet. It looks wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a fabulous machine! I broke down and got one last year. I have no idea what took me so long to do it.
ReplyDeleteLemon Sorbet...yum...and picture perfect!
Yummee! And congrats on your new ice cream maker. You're going to have so much fun! I love mine...got it last Christmas. I'd post a recipe each week from it if I could!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to head to the appliance section of Costco. I would love to whip up some healthier ice creams and sorbets this summer. Your lemon one sounds light and refreshing.
ReplyDeleteYou know Cathy I have thought about getting one too, but put it off, funny I'm going to
ReplyDeleteCostco today, I will check and see if mine has it. I love that you put Limoncello in your sorbet and I don't care if I have to drink it with a straw!
Cathy, I have had this ice cream maker for about 2 years and love it. I did buy the two bowls too and so worth it. I have a great berry sorbet recipe that a friend gave me and she said to add just 2 or 3 tablespoons of the liquor toward the end of the freezing. When I pull out the recipe the next time, I will send it to you.
ReplyDeleteCathy, you are off to a great start. Love how you served your lemon sorbet.
ReplyDeleteAnn
The sorbet looks so refreshing! Can't wait to see all the delicious flavors you'll come up with this summer!
ReplyDeleteI have the same machine but don't use it nearly enough. This lemon sorbet recipe looks refreshing and delicious. Great presentation!
ReplyDeleteI luv mine. So easy to use. I wish I had gotten the same deal and it had 2 canisters.
ReplyDeleteLuv the recipe.
How funny. I just bought the ice cream maker attahment for Kitchen Aid mixers yesterday and made my first batch of ice cream in years. I'm thinkin I like knowing what's in the stuff I eat. We did a basic vanilla with toasted coconut added in. I'll definitely try your sorbet. Not sure what Lemoncello is but I'll Google it and educate myself :)
ReplyDeleteI love it when a shopping plan works! Your photos and recipes are so gorgeous ... so should publish a cookbook! That top photo is outta-sight!
ReplyDeleteoh don't you just love that! we've been looking to get one too, so thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeletethe sorbet looks so refreshing, perfect for this hot weather we've been getting!
Oh this is too cool. I love the sorbet; citrus is right up my street! Wow to you new ice cream maker. I had it on a giveaway last month, and a lovely lady won it.
ReplyDeleteIt was just meant to be - you and the ice cream maker. So glad you got a bargain and showed us your wonderful sorbet. Keep the limoncello in for me.
ReplyDeleteI just came home from Costco with a bright shiny new ice cream maker. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLOL, I got mine at Costco too, (only got one bowl :( )..but have only used it twice..The gkids loved making it..
ReplyDeleteMaybe we will make your recipe this weekend..they are coming tomorrow..and I am not ready! But ready or not, watch out..:)
Have a wonderful weekend.
Your ice looks delicious. Puckering thinking about it.
And I read using alcohol prevents the ice crystals..so Lemoncello is a good thing..:)
Looks delicious..have put off getting an ice cream maker, don't think it would be wise for me to do!! LOL
ReplyDeleteI really like the name of your blog :) This sorbet looks so good. Wish I could make it too. pity I don t have the machine :( soon though
ReplyDeleteI would love to have an ice-cream maker too!
ReplyDeleteOoo....this looks perfect for the weather here. I'm sweating wet! I'm sure this will cool me down. yummm...
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the lemoncello ;) I bought my Cuisinart ice cream and sorbet maker at Sam's a few years ago and need to get it out of storage! I love lemon desserts. Your sorbet looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds perfect for this weekend! The perfect reason to buy an ice cream machine.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend to you,
Mimi
Oh, lemon sorbet! Wow stunning! And perfect! Oooh I have to visit you, Cathy! I wanted an ice cream maker (I have a small hand crank) and husband gave me some gift cards he got at Xmas from work and I saw that I could use them at my local kitchen supply shop for an ice cream maker! Husband said no and bought a fish poacher instead! I'll be showing him this gorgeous sorbet and make him feel so sorry!
ReplyDeleteI just bought this same ice cream maker & have already used it twice. This Lemon Sorbet looks delicious & refreshing!! Hello yummy summer!!!
ReplyDeleteI recently got that same ice cream freezer with a gift certificate. It has been a lot of fun and it is so easy to use! I have fond memories of hot summer days cranking an old fashioned ice cream freezer but this one lets me experiment with healthy variations on favorite flavors with little fuss. I especially like the size of the canister. It makes just enough but not too much.
