When I read the reviews of David Lebovitz' new book, Ready for Dessert, I knew it was one I had to buy. It's a compilation of his favorite dessert recipes, many from two previous books,
Room for Dessert and Ripe for Dessert, that are now out of print.
I have been happy with the chocolate chip cookie recipe I've used for many years, but when I saw his version I couldn't resist trying it. I have to agree with him, I think it's the best.
David's chocolate chip cookie recipe can be found on page 188 of his new book, Ready for Dessert, and you can also find it here.
I followed David's suggestion to use a good quality bittersweet
or semisweet chocolate. Regular chocolate chips are made to resist melting and it is the soft, gooey quality and the superior flavor of better chocolate that makes these cookies so good. That and two cups of mixed nuts. I used walnuts, almonds and pecans and thought it was perfect.
The dough is formed into four logs, refrigerated overnight and then cut into thick slices.
A recipe made approximately 30 cookies.

I intend to try most of the recipes in this beautiful book.
The stunning photos are irresistible, and who could pass over recipes for Frozen Caramel Mousse with Sherry-Glazed Pears, Chocolate, and Salted Almonds; Peach-Mascarpone Semifreddo; or Almond and Chocolate Chunk Biscotti?
The book is full of great information including a section on making wet and dry caramel. With David's clear instructions I have confidence to try them both.
I could use some of those right about now!
ReplyDeleteWe can never have enough of choc chip cookies :)
ReplyDeleteThis is the second time this morning I have seen David's recipe. This tells me two things... that I have to make these and that they are very good with such high accolades from two food bloggers.
ReplyDeleteI'm on my second cup of coffee. What I wouldn't give for a couple of your chocolate chip cookies. The perfect breakfast.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a very good cookbook. Thanks for the tip. Those cookies look wonderful. I love chocolate chip cookies with nuts. I like that you used more than one type. They must be very yummy!
ReplyDeleteI am supposed to refrain from buying new cookbooks. The Budget Boss has told me so. Now, I see this-- and I want it! I'd better start saving my pennies because this looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteChocolate chips are my hubbys favorites. I'll have to check it out at the bookstore.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Cathy....I had this recipe ready to bake today to send to my son for finals...
ReplyDeleteGMTA!
Your cookies look beautiful!
Yummy! Nothing is better than warm chocolate chip cookies!
ReplyDeleteThick and chocolatey, my ideal chocolate chip cookie.

Yum, thanks for sharing! Cookies are my favorite thing to bake these days. Quick and easy. I also have a go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe I use a lot and I like to substitute bittersweet chocolate chips. I've never liked sweet desserts so this works for me. I'm all about the texture. I love the way you slice these after chilling too. I'll be giving this recipe a try. I'll have to double it for sure!
ReplyDeleteHi Cathy,
ReplyDeleteMy Mom was here yesterday and over lunch she was telling me about some of the things she has made from your blog. One thing struck me in particular...the sweet salad for a fancy lunch with cinnamon croutons? HOW did I miss this? I am going to hunt it down. She is an avid cook too, and we like to take cooking classes together when we can. We have had lots of fun together cooking. Off to hunt down that recipe!!!
Oh boo.,...I can't find it Cathy. Do you know what salad she may have been talking about?
ReplyDeleteHey Kris - Your mom might be thinking of the roasted fruit and cinnamon crouton salad that Lisa posted on her blog My Own Sweet Thyme. You can find the link on my sidebar. I think this salad sounds fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI subscribe to David's blog and enjoy it very much. I know I would love these cookies.

ReplyDeleteYou are killing me! They look wonderful..I like the big and thick as opposed to the thin and crispy!
ReplyDeleteGood thing you don't live near..I would be over in a heartbeat! :)
I know what cook book I want next. The cookies look fabulous Cathy.
ReplyDeleteAnother cookbook....I have bought three in the last two weeks! I will delay this purchase but I will be trying the cookies. Love the chunks of chocolate!
ReplyDeleteI really like the log idea. I've never done it this way. I can't wait to try it! David does have a lot of fantastic recipes. Your cookies look irresistible! :)
ReplyDeleteoh i'm pretty sure i have to have that book! how yummy!
ReplyDeleteLooks so good! I am drooling here! Been a while since I last made cookies!

ReplyDeleteCathy, those really look like winners! WOW! And now I'm officially starving. Gee, look what you started. LOL! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this recipe. I do want to try it. I love CC cookies.
I'm still working on the house in St. A, but I took a much needed break and came home to blog. I go back to the grind tomorrow and am hoping to return to blogging sometime soon. Have missed all of you guys. I hate to think how many of your wonderful recipes I've missed. This is a definite keeper. THANKS!
XO,
Sheila :-)
When I saw these were refrigerated, I was sold! That way you can keep them in there and cut some off whenever you have the urge! Also, while I had no idea regular chips were made to prevent melting, it makes sense. But I have always preferred the darker chocolate anyway!
ReplyDeleteDavid's recipes are the best! Thanks for posting it, Cathy! You can never try enough cc cookies!
These look good and I like that they can be made one day and baked the next.
ReplyDeleteA recipe to keep in my files; my kids favorite cookie and I do occasionally like to treat them to it!
