I love rummaging through my mom's recipe files because I always find something good - favorite recipes and memories of childhood. She liked dates, especially combined with walnuts, and has several wonderful recipes that I'll post this winter. What I really wanted to try is Ina's recipe for Date Nut Spice Bread in her new book, Back to Basics. I substituted walnuts for pecans, but that was the only change I made. You can find her terrific recipe here.
Her date bread is full of fruit and nuts and is flavored with orange juice and zest, with some of the zest saved for the cream cheese mixture used as a topping. I had a slice with my coffee this morning and will probably be go back for another at tea time. If you like dates as much as I do, this recipe is for you. Enjoy.
Oh,I love dates too. This looks yummy. A good old timey recipe to have for my files.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Happy day to you.
My nana used to make this cake too. Loved it then, might have to try it now!
ReplyDeleteI need to check and see if my mom has a recipe file to share with me. This bread it loaded with good stuff!
ReplyDeleteThis looks just delicious Cathy!
ReplyDeleteIt's fall -- time for quick breads -- This is a favorite -- pecans are more prevelant on the prairie and I tend to use them even when it calls for walnuts -- but I will interchange in a recipe like this one. Except for BLACK walnuts!
ReplyDeleteYours is making me hungry and makes me realize that it IS afternoon tea time!
Another reinforcement that this home needs her book:) Thank you!

I didn't realize she had a new book...I don't have any of her books yet, maybe I should splurge and buy this one and ask my neighbor who has been on her show several times if he could get her to autograph it for me..:)
I'll even make her recipe for the bread and give it to him...neighborly, no..LOL
I think our mothers liked the same ingredients :) Ina's bread would be welcomed here also!
