School is starting again very soon so we took a mid-week break to go camping for a few days. Oregon has a new state park and the camping facilities are excellent. Stub Stewart State Park has roomy cabins with electricity (no water), front porches, fire pits and picnic tables. There's no roughing it here, but we do have the experience of sitting around a camp fire, cooking our meals outside, and meeting visitors from all around the country who visit Oregon.
The cabins have a beautiful view of the Coast Range and there is a great swimming area for the kids a short drive into the old town of Vernonia.
What is it about a campfire that compels boys to poke it with a stick. It just draws them to it and almost commands them to poke and prod until the fire is practically out. It must be a gender thing. Our sweet girl couldn't have cared less.
Oh, lordy, the weather was hot. Close to 100 degrees our second day there. But the river was cool and shady and nobody seemed to mind. There was always a breeze at the campground and, because it is close to the coast, the evenings were pleasant and we had no trouble sleeping.

We could see the mountains from the deck of the cabin and sunsets can be beautiful from this vantage point. We couldn't help but comment on the diversity of our state's geography and how much we all enjoy the Oregon coast, mountains, and high desert regions of Central Oregon.
Many campers come to this park because it is a short drive to the North Coast area. How's that for the best of all worlds?

ReplyDeleteHi Cathy--
ReplyDeleteLovely post. Never been to Oregon but it is on
the list of places to visit. I'm not sure what it
is with males and fire but my big boy...(husband)
can't leave a fire alone when we have our fire pit going! I think it is a male thing.
Enjoy your weekend!
Melinda
That looks like so much fun! The kiddos are just adorable..what a wonderful experience!
ReplyDeleteIt is very hoty and muggy here the past few days..our gkids are down the block at the beach..a breeze, but a warm one. The ocean is ferocious from Hurricane Bill, I hope he blows out to sea and takes the heat and humidity with him!
Great pics, Cath, thanks for sharing!
I love Stubb Stewart park! We camped there last year, and I fell in love with those cabins! The views up there are incredible. I had no idea there was a swimming spot in Vernonia ... I'll keep that in mind for future campouts. :-)
